Each weekday on our FaceBook page you’ll find a prayer, reflection, or Bible verse centered around a weekly word. Each Friday we will share the recap of our FB posts here on our blog. Our hope is that we band together to devote our pregnancies, birth experiences and parenting to God our creator.
The Lord our God is the one and only Lord. And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind and all your strength. Mark 12:29-30
The last few weeks we’ve been thinking about what we are rooted in; what key messages are we holding onto and allowing God to grow deep within our souls. And of those, what do we want to pass on to our children. What do we want our kids to know with every fiber of their being?
A fundamental for our family – we want our kids to deeply know that God is first, above all else. Our Heavenly Father put us first when He sent His Son, Jesus to die for us. I want to live a life worthy of that enormously sacrificial gift. My heart’s desire is that my children will grow up knowing that God demands exclusivity in the most loving ways. He longs for us to wholeheartedly and unabashedly proclaim, “But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” Joshua 24:15
“I think the reason we sometimes have the false sense that God is so far away is because that is where we have put him. We have kept him at a distance, and then when we are in need and call on him in prayer, we wonder where he is. He is exactly where we left him.”
Ravi Zacharias, from Has Christianity Failed You?
Where have you put God? He loves you so much that He wants to be with You every moment. Do you allow Him to do that, or is He relegated to a kind of “elf on the shelf”, taken down when all else fails, or just on Sundays and holidays?
Your kids see God through you. Your family is a little microcosm and learning lab where they grow their deepest roots. What are you growing in their hearts and minds?
He is jealous for me
loves like a hurricane, I am a tree
bending beneath the weight of His wind and mercy
when all of a sudden
I am unaware of these afflictions eclipsed by glory
and I realise just how beautiful You are
and how great Your affections are for me
-Lyrics from “How He Loves Me” by David Crowder Band
Hurricane Matthew reminded us again how powerful the winds and waves can be. Humanity with all its knowledge, technology and industry can be destroyed in mere minutes by the power of natural. But praise God, He uses His power and might to love us. He is jealous for us (2 Corinthians 11:2). He wants us completely and exclusively. With the force of a hurricane, I want my children to know of His love and understand that nothing and no one goes before our God. I want this truth deep within their souls, grounding them to withstand the harshest of storms.
And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you? He requires only that you fear the Lord your God, and live in a way that pleases him, and love him and serve him with all your heart and soul. Deuteronomy 10:12
There are so many things pulling at my heart and cluttering my mind. But You say it is all worthless without You. So, although bound to fail more than I care to admit, I will put You first above all else. I long to give you exclusivity as the sole owner of my heart and mind. Help me each day to do this and to show my children that this is the best way to live.
“Everyone who acknowledges me publicly here on earth,
I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven.” –Matthew 10:32
