Instructor Opportunities

Alpha exists because we believe parents should be informed and prepared for birth and caring for their newborn. If you share in that passion, are a Christian, and have the heart of a teacher then you should consider teaching Alpha to your community.

We have worked very hard over the last few years to create a well rounded, up-to-date birth curriculum. We gladly share our curriculum with parties interested in becoming Alpha Instructors.

Here is how you, the birth professional, can become an Alpha Instructor

  • Fill out the Alpha Instructor Application online; submit application fee of $25 through the Shop.
  • Submit an informal resume, including references and relevant birth, education or ministry experience to annie@alphachildbirth.com. Each individual is reviewed circumstantially, but experience and/or education in a professional capacity serving women and children is a requirement (including but not limited to doula, midwife, nurse, childbirth educator). Please see below the alternative entry into Alpha Childbirth Instruction if you are starting fresh into this service (we’re so glad to have you).
  • Understand and sign the Alpha Commitment document which includes the Alpha’s Statement of Faith, Conviction of Birth and Responsibility to Students (outlined above).
  • Complete a phone interview.
  • Once approved, you will need to pay a deposit toward your yearly instructor licensing fee ($50) which also covers the cost of your Alpha Instructor Workbook which will be mailed to you.
  • Read the workbook, making notes of questions before the training session.
  • A mentor will either meet with you or setup a web conference to take you through the workbook where you can take notes and ask questions. Depending on the number of applications, this may be done with more than one applicant.
  • Once this process is completed you will be assigned a mentor that will be available to answer any questions as you prepare and start to teach Alpha.
  • Upon approval from your mentor you will need to pay the balance of your yearly instructor fee ($200) to become a licensed instructor and begin teaching Alpha.

How to Become an Alpha Instructor (for soon-to be Birth Professionals)

We have adopted key components of ICEA’s (International Childbirth Education Association) traditional pathway to become a certified instructor. It is at your discretion whether you complete all components required by ICEA to become an ICEA certified instructor, and ICEA certification is not required to be an Alpha Instructor, although it is encouraged. The process to become an Alpha Instructor is as follows:

  • Submit an informal resume and application to annie@alphachildbirth.com, submit application fee of $25.
  • Complete a phone interview and once welcomed to Alpha, take the following steps as part of your training.
  • Join ICEA and enroll in the education certification program to receive independent study guides ($75+$100)
  • Required reading: Pregnancy, Childbirth and the Newborn, by Simkin, Whalley, Keppler, Durham, & Bolding (2010) OR The Birth Partner by Simkin (2007), AND The Labor Progress Handbook: Early Interventions to Prevent and Treat Dystocia, by Simkin & Ancheta (2011)
  • After you have completed the study guides and reading, attend an ICEA Professional Childbirth Educator Workshop (~$400)
  • Submit your completed workshop certificate to Alpha.
  • Understand and sign the Alpha Commitment document which includes the Alpha’s Statement of Faith, Conviction of Birth and Responsibility to Students (outlined above).
  • Pay a deposit toward your yearly instructor licensing fee ($50) which also covers the cost of your Alpha Instructor Workbook which will be mailed to you.
